1 month before the Grand Raid BCVS 😍
It’s all about the details!
In terms of training, an “overloading” phase followed by a “tapering” phase are recommended to reach peak performance on September 6.
In concrete terms, we can take advantage of the next 2 weeks to set up a 2 or 3-day reconnaissance block at race pace. The idea is to do a little race simulation, dissecting the course but putting some pace into the climbs. We’ll also test out the refreshments and get used to the altitude by passing the Pas de Lona. The more experienced will surely take part in the whole of the médio pou grand fondo stations for a sort of dress rehearsal.
Remember: more hours and more race pace than the usual polarized training model.
In the last 2 weeks, it’s no longer a question of doing volume, we’re entering the sharpening period. You reduce the load, keep the intensity, but don’t test yourself on distance and race pace. In this way, you reach top form on D-day, with an overcompensation effect.
Reducing the amount of training we do gives us time to refurbish the bike. If the technical inspection is no longer in place, it’s best to have your bike checked by a professional to avoid a few glitches on the big day. “Se freni, non Vinci”. Of course, but checking your brakes is essential. Brake pads, discs and fluid. An air bubble moving at altitude can easily cause damage on the first descent. Tires, chain, bearings, gear adjustment… A little overhaul after months of training is not a luxury.
Enjoy the home stretch!
Arnaud.
